Whenever the subject of Adult Swim history comes up, I always make a point to recognize the creators, designers, animators, etc… the unsung heroes who work diligently to make sure you’re watching the best and entertaining programming out there. Jon Schnepp was definitely a hero who gave it his all in anything he did. Jon’s earliest work on Adult Swim dates back to the very beginning where he helped edit episodes of the classic, Space Ghost: Coast 2 Coast. Building his Swim resume proper, Jon moved on to help with early designs on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and eventually went on to not only direct, but design the characters for Metalocalypse, as well as co-direct Season 4 of Venture Bros. It was with Venture in particular, where I was first introduced to Jon, during New York Comic-Con 2009.
It’s always interesting to me about an individual’s adventures, but Jon’s were quite remarkable. Outside of his Swim endeavors, I learned that he created the titles and directed some for the Upright Citizens Brigade TV show that aired on Comedy Central and eventually went on to create some crazy yet fantastic works, such as his documentary “The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?” where with the help of Kickstarter, did extensive research as well as chatted with the people who were responsible in attempting to create “The Death of Superman” film, directed by Tim Burton and starring Nicolas Cage. The film obviously never happened, but Jon was determined to find out what the movie was all about, what hurdles the creators and crew went through in the attempt, and ultimately “what happened” that led to it’s demise. From directing, producing, to hosting both panels as well as online shows, Jon did what most (myself included) would dream of doing.
The most magnificent aspect of Jon, however, was his kindness and generosity. Jon just seemed like the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back. I remember a time or two where I had asked him to guest on a podcast or cancer marathon, and despite being busy, graciously gave his time to chat about some of the subjects he loved (such as Pop-Culture, Comedy, and all-around Geekdom… things that I hold near and dear to my heart as I continue touting those and many other subjects with this website).
Jon Schnepp was an amazingly talented individual and a great friend to many whose lives and adventures have been and will be inspired by his adventures as well as his drive to do what he loved. I extend my most sincere condolences to his fiance, Holly as well as the entire Schnepp family during this devastating loss.
