Childhood Remastered: Episode 91 – Captain N – The Game Master

[waveplayer url=”https://media.blubrry.com/childhood_remastered/dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3/www.childhoodremastered.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Episode-91-Captain-N-The-Game-Master.mp3″]

This week we decided to cover Captain N: The Game Master at Sean’s request. We mentioned before how Toyetic some shows were, but this easily has them beat. The protagonist is named “Captain Nintendo”, which can’t be any more of a product placement. This show was quite popular in it’s time, and it’s easy to see why: it hit every mark for any early 90’s kid. But could that just be our nostalgia brain, or was there real truth to that. To be fair, Sean picked this show to cover specifically because he thought it might be terrible and not hold up 27 years worth of Nostalgia goggles. Come grab a listen and if he was right…or not.

From Wikipedia:

There was also a comic book version by Valiant Comics, despite only featuring characters from games produced by Nintendo. The show is also part of an hour-long block in Season 2 with The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and with Super Mario World in Season 3 in a half-hour block.

After covering such an awful show subject last week we felt we needed a palate cleanser. Freakazoid! we are actually the requesters this week, and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. Freakazoid was a sort of accident pet project of Steven Spielberg, Bruce Timm, and Tom Ruegger that was cut far shorter than it should have been. How did such a smart and ingenious show get cancelled after only 2 short seasons? Would this show be successful today?

From Wikipedia:

Freakazoid! is an American animated television series created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini and developed by Tom Ruegger for the Kids’ WB programming block of The WB. The series chronicles the adventures of the title character, Freakazoid, a manic, insane superhero who battles with an array of super villains. The show also features mini-episodes of adventures of other bizarre superheroes. The show was produced by Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation. The cartoon was the third animated series produced by the collaboration of Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros. Animationduring the animation renaissance of the 1990s.

This week’s “user request” comes from Shawn…thank you, Shawn!? Street Sharks is arguably one of, if not THE most Toyetic animated series we’ve ever watched. Sean argues it is also one of the worst shows we’ve ever watched, while Chris is not so sure. Chris as been hoping to cover this show for over a year and really has been wanting to talk about a pretty big conspiracy around this show. Some of it involving Henry Winkler? I guess you’ll just have to listen and see what we’re talking about.

It was produced by DIC Entertainment and aired from 1994 to 1997, originally as a part of the Amazin’ Adventures lineup.[2]Later, in 1996, the Street Sharks teamed up with the Dino Vengers and the show became Dino Vengers Featuring Street Sharks. This week’s request comes from an unknown listener lost to the mists of time…If you ARE that listener, drop us a line and let us know! The Little Mermaid animated series was a short lived animated series based on the Disney film of the same name. This was a first for Disney, and was quite a big deal at the time. Even leading to animated TV series for other Disney properties. Both of us remember very little of this show, and neither of us remotely qualify as the prime demographic for this show. But what the hell, let’s dive in!

From Wikipedia:

Disney’s The Little Mermaid is an American animated television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animationbased on the 1989 Disney film of the same name. It features the adventures of Ariel as a mermaid prior to the events of the film. This series is the first Disney television series to be spun off from a major animated film. Some of the voice actors of the film reprise their roles in the series, among them Jodi Benson as Ariel, Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian, Kenneth Mars as King Triton and Pat Carroll as Ursula. Other voice actors include Edan Gross and Bradley Pierce as Flounder, and Jeff Bennett as Prince Eric.

This week we decided to take a break from our “user request” list and just do something that we want to do! There are many iterations of Sonic The Hedgehog, but this is widely considered to be the better of the two. This series got a much shorter run, and is often remembered less often than its cohort (the series that shall not be named). With all of that said, why such a short run? Why is considered to be better? Why would a better show not get renewed? We don’t know either but we’re going to try and muddle our way through figuring it out! Come listen this week as we talk the better of the two 1990’s Sonic series.

From Wikipedia:

This week’s episode comes to us from mega listener Shawn via Facebook. Rock & Rule was an animated sci-musical produced by Nelvana. The same producer that brought us Inspector Gadget and The Care Bears? Yes, you read that correctly. To say that this film is obscure and has a cult following is a massive understatement. This movie had a very limited release with a box office of only $30,000. But why? What happened? Why such a limited release? Grab a listen as we dive in to the who, what, where, why, and see how well this cult classic holds to the test of time!

Childhood Rematered: Episode 85 – Dennis the Menace

Episode 85 – Dennis the Menace

This week’s request comes to us via Facebook from Jason Cromer- Thanks Jason! Dennis the Menace is based on a comic strip from 1951 that has been made into several TV series, a movie, a breakfast cereal, and even a Dairy Queen mascot. But neither of us has seen this show in literal decades so we have no idea if it’s actually still good. There’s also been no use of this property for decades either which really seems like a shame. Come listen as we discuss this and more!

From Wikipedia:

Dennis the Menace is an American animated series produced by DIC Entertainment (with season 2 co-produced by Crawleys Animation), based on the comic strip by Hank Ketcham.

The young blond boy with a cowlick and a mischievous personality, Dennis the Menace, gets into numerous scrapes and adventures with his dog Ruff and his friends Joey, Margaret, Gina, Tommy, PeeBee and Jay.

Dennis is an impulsive, angel-faced little devil who is always getting into scrapes which end up tormenting his hapless next-door neighbor, Mr. Wilson (though Dennis always means well). Dennis finds himself involved in all kinds of wild adventures (some of which are fantasy-based like the international espionage and trips into the past stories) but always manages to save the day.

Highlights:

DIC Entertainment, CBS, General Mills, Dennis the Menace, Hank Ketcham, Fantasia, Bambi, Pinocchio, Mr. Hook, Atkinson FIlm-Arts, COPS, The Raccoons, Teddy Ruxpin, The Care Bears, Mummies Alive, Captain N: The Game Master, Dinosaucers, Stunt Dawgs, The Wizard of Oz, Michael Maliani, M.A.S.K. Episode 84 – Return to Oz

This week’s request actually comes to us via Sean who hasn’t picked an episode topic in a while! Return to Oz was by no means a box office success having only grossed about one third of its total budget. But does that really make it a bad movie, or just misunderstood? We think it might be a bit more complicated than that. Come grab a listen and see how complicated!

This week’s episode comes to us via Robert who even sent us copies of movie he made for us himself, Thanks Rob! Captain EO was a 17 minute feature film played in Disneyland and Disney World during the 1980s and 1990s. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Michael Jackson and Anjelica Huston Captain EO is widely considered one of the most expensive films ever made. Captain EO has also never had a home video release and currently is no longer playing. We both grew up watching this film during our frequent trips to Disneyland and figured it was about time we brought more attention this often forgotten piece of cinematic history.

The attraction returned to the Disney Parks in 2010 as a tribute after Jackson’s death. The film was shown for the final time at Epcot on December 6, 2015.
